The ”Pistachio Principle” and Weight Loss
There are many benefits to eating slowly and mindfully and pistachios are the original “slow food.” The experience is more joyful and eating slowly allows the brain to register a “full” feeling---before the food has been overeaten. Pistachios also offer a visual cue of how much has been eaten. Unlike sitting down with a bowl of chips, pistachio shells that accumulate serve as a reminder to slow down. Behavioral eating experts found that eating pistachios helped individuals consume fewer calories without consciously restricting their calories—just by seeing the empty shells! These findings were used to devise a set of techniques to lose weight without deprivation called the “Pistachio Principle.”
